This beautiful library in Peterborough New Hampshire is apparently the "oldest free library in the world supported by taxation." (If you click on the picture of the marble plaque it should go larger and you can read it more easily.)
Note: If you have an interesting library building or library statue photo that you would like posted in this series email me: thereadingjourney@gmail.com
Love it!
ReplyDeletewow. Very marvelous. The architecture definately speaks of it's age.
ReplyDeleteIt is a gorgeous building thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteI nearly put my foot in it. I saw the 1892 date at the bottom and thought, "half the municipal libraries in Melbourne are older than that". Then I clicked on the piccie and saw the 1833 date, which is of course 2 years before Batman.
Have you ever thought of confusing your American friends by telling them you come from a state in Oz whose founding father was Batman?
Love the pictures and the interesting history of the library.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed Al's comments!
I am glad that you all enjoyed the photos. It was not long after Christmas when I took it - as you can see by the wreaths hanging on the door.
ReplyDeleteAl, I don't know much about Batman myself. I really should brush up on my Melbourne specific history. I remember reading Manning Clark's A Short History of Australia a fair few years back, but not a whole lot has stuck with me.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing.
