Quote about Reading

"All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you. " - Diane Setterfield (The Thirteenth Tale)

I wonder if I move from book to book too quickly instead of leaving a few days of 'mulling it over' time. I have always read books quickly, but I did used to leave at least a few days gap between them. Since starting to blog I seem to move straight on to the next one in order to keep up with it all. Do you guys leave a gap between books, or do you read the next one immediately? Has blogging changed your reading habits?

  1. Blogging hasn't changed a thing for me. I've been keeping lists of what I've read since 1993, constantly trying to read more every year to keep up with my list of what I *want* to read. I go from one book to the next in the blink of an eye. I usually have the next one sitting next to me as I come to the end of the current read. Blogging has merely helped me realize I'm not alone! :-)

  2. I like this quote.

I used to jump from book to book but not anymore. I like to sleep on a finished book and write the review the next day and then the day after, I start a new book!

  3. I used to wonder how people read and reviewed books so quickly. Now I have a stack of books I want to finish by mid august, and have found I can skip the descriptions and follow the thread of the story through the dialogue and reading the first sentence of each paragraph, etc. It helps if you have to get your review copies done!

  4. I usually have three or even four books in progress at any one time to suit my mood. I don't review everything I read, but I do think about a book for a few days before I write about it.

To fill in the gaps between reviews, I post other subjects as well to keep my non-book readers—and me—happy. That takes the pressure off of having to read like a maniac.

  5. I also have a 'journal' of books read dating back to the mid 90's. I do not read nearly as much as many bloggers, averaging about a book a week. I do like to take a day or two between books.

Blogging hasn't changed my reading habits, it has given me the opportunity to read more simply because the books arrive at my door. I do read books that I wouldn't pick up on my own though.. I recently made the decision to stop this. I want to read books I'm interested in reading (which makes writing about it easier).

I do not post every book. This would be a good question for bloggers... might be interesting to see the replies.

  6. That must be interesting to have kept a journal of all the books you have read for years. I did that when I was in college but then gave up on it. I don't post reviews for everything I read either, but I do for most of it. When I read too many books in a row quickly with no break I feel like I am stuffing myself.

  7. Interesting topic! I can read books back to back if they're in a series, but now that I'm blogging I've been giving myself a little more reflection time when I finish a book to try and figure out my reaction. I actually like this better, as it seems I'm getting more out of my reading. On the other hand, I can still read multiple books at a time as long as they're not too similar.
